Administrative policy records, 1967-1973.

Contains the administrative records of Stephen C. O'Connell, sixth president of the University of Florida. Also included are his public speeches. In addition to the governance of the university, the files document the university's relations with federal and state agencies, including the Florida Board of Regents, and academic associations such as the Southern Association of College and Schools. A considerable portion of the series is taken up with matters related to faculty-administration relations. These include controversies surrounding tenure denial to two radical professors. Protests against the Vietnam War and demonstrations for students rights are also documented. Most notable are the files related to a sit-in by African-American students that culminated in the resignation of a third of the black student body. The growth and development of the campus are given considerable attention. During O'Connell's tenure, the Office of Student Affairs was expanded and the University of Florida Foundation was reorganized. O'Connell's efforts to fund a student activity center are also documented.
